IDEA, as a concurrent engineering company, has carried out a pioneering hydrogen injection project at the ENAGÁS regasification plant in Cartagena.
The pilot project for the injection of hydrogen into the local network in Cartagena is intended to be a pioneering activity in Spain in terms of H2 injection into the gas network. The development of the project involved the creation of a consortium together with the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon (FHa) and Hidrógena. IDEA Engineering will be responsible for developing the Construction Project that will make this pioneering investment in Spain a reality.
“ IDEA Engineering will be responsible for developing the Construction Project.”
In addition, it is intended that this project lays the foundations for future facilities that inject hydrogen into the gas network, as well as a future phase of greater scope to be developed at the Enagas plant in Cartagena.
“The goal is to obtain renewable gas to reduce the carbon footprint.”
Specifically, the implementation of phase 2 of the Renovagás project has been proposed with the purpose of producing Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) at the Cartagena Plant from H2 obtained by water electrolysis and CO2 obtained from the nearby industry for the self-consumption demand of the facility.
Hydrogen Injection
This project produces 100% clean green hydrogen from solar energy thanks to an electrolysis process that does not emit CO2. The green hydrogen generated is fed into the facility’s internal network mixed with natural gas for self-consumption, which maximises the plant’s energy efficiency and reduces its carbon footprint. It is also the first experience of real hydrogen injection into a regasification plant in Spain and Europe, supported by a small-scale electrical storage system.
Aspects to be taken into account for hydrogen injection in the Cartagena Plant’s ERM H1::
- Based on the proposed hydrogen production, it is estimated that the percentage of hydrogen in the natural gas will not exceed the limit value defined in the NGTS PD-01.
- The project study should include the review of additional equipment to be installed next to the electrolyser and aspects to be considered for the autonomous operation of the system and compliance with the gas quality specifications of the NGTS PD-01.

The Enagás roadmap for the period between 2020 and 2026 considers renewable gases as one of its main axes, which is fundamental for the company to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. For this reason, among its plans for the next six years, it contemplates the allocation of 300 million euros for the development of 100% clean green hydrogen, biogas and biomethane projects to promote the economy’s decarbonisation process.
In recent years, IDEA, under its IDEAgreen programme, is committed to reducing the carbon footprint, focusing on the development of 100% sustainable projects, such as electric mobility, renewable energy, bioclimatic architecture and green hydrogen.
